Banning Cell Phones in PA Classrooms – a bad idea

An open letter to my PA House Representatives (thanks Jim and Lee for bringing this to my attention.) Find your Reps and write them a letter about how you feel.

Dear Mr. Creighton and Mr. Brubaker,

Upon hearing of the introduction of PA House Bill 363, I have to voice my disgust that the House would even consider something like this.  Banning electronic devices in schools? Are you trying to put PA schools back into the dark ages? Only aging, uninformed, tech-illiterate representatives would even consider this (just the fact that they’ve included language to ban ‘beepers’ shows that they are out of touch with reality – no one uses ‘beepers’ any more – get with the century!)

This bill helps to stifle creativity, block 21st Century Skill-building, and take away one of the only links to the outside, global marketplace our students might have. To take this away because someone is afraid is simply ludicrous.

So, with that, I would hope that you, as my representative would help stop this bill in its tracks and help the House move on to much more important legislation – like helping our schools to move into the 21st Century with up-to-date tools, not back into the dark ages.

Thank you for your time on this matter,

Sincerely,

David Solon

Thanks for this too, Jim:

OK, folks, go here and find your rep and let them know what you think.

Lots of folks are up in arms over this one. This blog post (from Dan Callahan) pointed me to this petition that you can sign if you, too, are against this bill.
